About the Medicon Valley Beacons
About the Medicon Valley Beacons
By analysing the existing 188金宝搏 strongholds in Medicon Valley and factoring in future global trends and demands, we have prioritized four Medicon Valley Beacons for further development.
During 2014, the exact focus of each Beacon is has been decided in close consultation with key stakeholders and experts. The discussions has resulted in four vision papers presenting the objective, the mission and an action plan with recommendations for future collaboration within each Beacon. Two concepts for further cooperation has been suggested:
- The creation of a meeting platform and a seminar series, ensuring increased opportunities to strengthen networks between industry and academia in a short-term perspective.
- Explore the possibilities to raise external funding in order to realize the long-term visions outlined in the vision papers.
Given the commitment from regional stakeholders and that the financial framework are at place, these concepts are ready to be launched in 2015. For more information and to download vision papers, click on the beacon symbols below.
The drug delivery market is highly attractive to the pharmaceutical industry and the race to develop new innovative drug delivery solutions is highly competitive. Drug delivery can be described as a formulation or a device that optimizes the therapeutic effect, safety, and/or compliance of an active pharmaceutical ingredient. Medicon Valley has a solid scientific foundation across academia and industry within the drug delivery field and thus has many strongholds to build upon. The vision for this Beacon is to create a world-class drug delivery center which focuses on clinical challenges, conducts basic cross-disciplinary drug delivery research, develops ground breaking strategies for enhancing drug transport over biological barriers, and translates these into advanced technologies that can meet the future demand.
Understanding immunological processes and the mechanisms which activate the immune system play a central role in developing treatments for a wide range of chronic diseases including diabetes, arthritis, atherosclerosis, skin diseases such as psoriasis, allergies, chronic neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s, and many types of cancers. Medicon Valley has a long tradition in both basic and clinical immunological research to build on with numerous pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies already engaged in developing new ways to treat these diseases which affect millions of people around the world.
Structural biology seeks to visualize the structure of biological molecules, such as proteins, in order to understand their functions, properties and interaction. By using various techniques such as x-ray diffraction, neutron scattering and crystallography, structural biologists can obtain a three-dimensional picture of a protein involved in a disease, i.e. a target protein. Knowing the structure of the target protein helps predict which drugs will inhibit or stimulate it. This greatly optimizes the drug discovery process.
Advances in the field of systems biology are revolutionizing our understanding of disease trajectories and spurring developments in personalized medicine. Denmark and Sweden have a long history of collecting data through their unique social security number systems. As our knowledge of the human genome grows, there is an enormous opportunity in combining knowledge on the molecular level with the vast amounts of data from patient records, bio-banks, registries etc. With Medicon Valley researchers already developing methods to explore and utilize such data, there is significant potential for creating a world-class research environment within the field of systems biology.
